Day 2 Fabulous flora

Activity 1. Weaving a tall tale

I am very interested in harakeke / flax weaving at school we have done little flowers. I am interested in doing something much bigger maybe a hat or a bag. They have classes at our local marae to teach you how to weave. I was gifted a lovely hat from my cousin Amiria her nana from Te kaha made it she is very good at weaving. The hat started off very dark and slowly has become lighter.

The strongest person I know is my poppa, I love him alot, he has lung and liver cancer and was only given months to live he was given special medicine and is still alive two years later making him the strongest person i know. I am very thankful to have him still here. He picks me up from school and always tells me the silliest jokes.

Activity 3 Stranger than fiction

  1. Mōrena Lauryn,

Well done for completing another days worth of Summer Learning Journey activities— you're nearly half way through the programme which is so wonderful to see. I'm very proud of your achievements so far!

Activity 1: 'Weaving a Tall Tale' — well done for telling us whether or not you'd like to try weaving harakeke, I'm pleased to read that you've already woven flowers before. I had another student in a different cluster express how difficult she found weaving a flower so good job for being able to do it! I'm so stoked to see that you're interested in having a go at something a little more challenging, I had no idea that hats were woven from harakeke— but of course, it makes so much sense! My whaea taught me how to weave, and I'm going to see her this weekend so maybe I can give weaving a hat a go, too. Let me know how you go!

Activity 2: 'Might Mangroves' — I'm so happy to read that your koro is the strongest person that you know. I'm so sorry to hear about the cancer in his lungs and his liver, but it's good to know that he's fighting it and defying the odds— kia kaha to your koro and to your whānau. I think it's so nice that he picks you up from school, what a lovely man :)

Activity 3 (bonus activity): 'Stranger than Fiction' — thanks for finding two exotic plants and telling us about their similarities as well as their differences. I really like the Venus Fly Trap and the picture of the Pitcher Plant, they're very handy in a house full of flies (like my Mums)... maybe I should get her some so that there's less flies!

Keep up the awesome mahi, Lauryn. You're doing a wonderful job!

    Cheers,

    Jordan
